Novena to El Divino Rostro
ADMIN'S NOTE: In the spirit of the history of the devotion to El Divino Rostro, the compiler and arranger included the Miserere (Psalm 51), the same prayer that the Bicol clergy and faithful prayed in front of the Divino Rostro, in supplication to end the Cholera Morbo epidemic in 1882, this will serve as an Act of Contrition, as we supplicate for an end of the Wuhan virus (COVID 19) and its variants.
This Novena will be prayed anytime, especially the following significant days for the devotion to the Holy Face...
1. 9 days before the Shrove Tuesday
2. 9 days before the Feast of the Transfiguration

OPENING PRAYERS
PSALM 51 (Miserere mei Deus)
Ant: Make Thy Face to shine upon Thy servant, and save me in Thy mercy: let me not be confounded, O Lord, for I have called upon Thee.
V. Have mercy on me, O God, according to thy great mercy. And according to the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my iniquity.
R. Wash me yet more from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my iniquity, and my sin is always before me.
V. To thee only have I sinned, and have done evil before thee: that thou mayst be justified in thy words and mayst overcome when thou art judged.
R. For behold I was conceived in iniquities; and in sins did my mother conceive me. For behold thou hast loved truth: the uncertain and hidden things of thy wisdom thou hast made manifest to me.
V. Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed: thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow.
R. To my hearing thou shalt give joy and gladness: and the bones that have been humbled shall rejoice. Turn away thy face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.
V. Create a clean heart in me, O God: and renew a right spirit within my bowels.
R. Cast me not away from thy face; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
V. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, and strengthen me with a perfect spirit.
R. I will teach the unjust thy ways: and the wicked shall be converted to thee.
V. Deliver me from blood, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall extol thy justice. O Lord, thou wilt open my lips: and my mouth shall declare thy praise.
R. For if thou hadst desired sacrifice, I would indeed have given it: with burnt offerings thou wilt not be delighted.
V. A sacrifice to God is an afflicted spirit: a contrite and humbled heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. Deal favorably, O Lord, in thy good will with Sion; that the walls of Jerusalem may be built up.
R. Then shalt thou accept the sacrifice of justice, oblations and whole burnt offerings: then shall they lay calves upon thy altar.
Ant: Make Thy Face to shine upon Thy servant, and save me in Thy mercy: let me not be confounded, O Lord, for I have called upon Thee.

ACT OF HOMAGE
Look down upon us, O Sweetest and Most Merciful Jesus, Our Lord and Our Redeemer, we humbly prostrate before your sacred image. We give thanks to You because of the beautiful graces. You have bestowed upon us. We glorify You through this sacred representation of Your Holy Face which You have imprinted on the linen of that kind woman, Veronica, on your way to Calvary to be sacrificed for our sins. O Jesus, Our Most Holy Redeemer, grant that we may not turn our backs to You and give us the grace to see You, face to face in heaven, Who together with the Father and the Holy Ghost, live and reign world without end. Amen

PRAYER FOR EACH DAY
DAY 1
Most Loving and Most Patient Jesus, redeemer of the human race, we give thanks to You because You have descended from your heavenly mansion, moved by your ardent love for the fallen seeds of Adam in order to redeem them from the eternal captivity of sins. We adore You, O Christ the Lord, because through the pious woman, You have left to us a lasting memory of your passion, imprinting Your image on the linen with which Veronica wiped the blood and sweat from Your Holy Face. Through the merits of your passion, by the intercession of that pious woman, have mercy on us, O Lord, all the days of our lives especially during this novena and grant us the graces and favors we ask, and we desire, if it is for your greatest glory and for the good of our souls. Amen.
Recite Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be (repeat 3 times)
then followed by Novena Prayer, Litany and Final Prayer

DAY 2
O Most Loving Jesus, in Your sufferings You have shown your immeasurable love to us. Wherever we look, we find limitless good which You grant graciously to us sinners, whom You redeemed with your precious blood. O Jesus, we have seen with the eyes of our thoughts that You were sweating blood at the Garden of Gethsemane for our sins. You were accused falsely before the Sanhedrin, and finally your enemies were able to get a death verdict from the representative of Rome, Pontius Pilate. Through the merits of Your passion and death, teach us, O Most Glorious Holy Face, and place us under your heavenly protection. Have mercy on us in all the days of our lives, and grant us the graces and favors we ask and desire, if it is for your greatest glory, and for the good of our souls. Amen.

DAY 3
O Most Loving Jesus, with great joy You were met by the people of Jerusalem, chanting “Hosanna Filii David,” but after five days, those very people who proclaimed You on the first Palm Sunday, their King were the ones clamoring for Your crucifixion. O Holy Face, You were brought before the courts of men and there You were falsely accused and unjustly accused. Through the merits of your passion and death, grant O Lord Jesus, the remission of our sins. Have mercy on us in all the days of our lives, and grant us the graces and favors we ask and desire, if it is for your greatest glory, and for the good of our souls. Amen.

DAY 4
O Most Loving Jesus, in your sufferings You have shown your infinite love for us sinners, whom You have redeemed with your precious blood, O Divine Face, light and splendor of the Father. It was agreed upon by your enemies to impose upon you the death penalty and You accepted the unjust penalty in order that the closed doors of heavens may be thrown open. What was the reason O Lord, why You should be mocked, beaten, crowned with thorns and nailed to the cross? Through the merits of your passion and death, O Lord, grant us the remission of our sins. Have mercy on us in all the days of our lives, and grant us the graces and favors we ask and desire, if it is for your greatest glory, and for the good of our souls. Amen.

DAY 5
O Most Loving and Merciful Jesus, our Divine Savior, who can suffer the sufferings You had undergone and can measure your infinite love for us, ungrateful sinners, who were the cause of your coming into this world to become man like us, to atone for our sins? Who can fathom the depth of your wisdom that the ransom You have paid for the debt of Adam to the Eternal Father was not gold nor silver, but your precious blood? Through the merits of your passion and death, forgive our sins, O Lord, and have mercy on us in all the days of our lives. DAY 6
O Most Glorious Face of Our Redeemer, grant us the privilege to remove the thorns from your divine head, and to crown our heads with those thorns caused by our innumerable sins. O Most Loving Jesus, Who was mocked by the populace at the courtyard of that cowardly judge, grant that we may be made participants of the merits of your passion and death. But first of all, give us the special favor to feel even a scintilla of your passion, O Most Merciful Redeemer. We firmly resolve with your divine grace, not to offend You again. Have mercy on us in all the days of our lives, and grant us the graces and favors we ask and desire, if it is for your greatest glory, and for the good of our souls. Amen.

O Most Pious Face of Our Redeemer, we are here prostrate before your divine presence, asking forgiveness for our sins, for not minding the benefits You have been bestowing upon us, and the sufferings You have undergone for the transgressions of the world. We see the wounds on your divine body caused by our sins. We are sincerely sorry for having offended Thee. Through the merits of your passion and death, show us the right path to that heavenly mansion. Have mercy on us in all the days of our lives, and grant us the graces and favors we ask and desire, if it is for your greatest glory, and for the good of our souls. Amen.

DAY 8
O Most Humble Lamb and Most Patient Jesus, Lord and Redeemer of these captive creatures, we bring our thoughts to the summit of Calvary where the unsurpassed drama of redemption took place. We see You with the eyes of our souls, hanging on the cross which You made the instrument of our redemption. Through the merits of your passion and death, deign, O Lord, to pardon our sins. Have mercy on us in all the days of our lives, and grant us the graces and favors we ask and desire, if it is for your greatest glory, and for the good of our souls. Amen.

CLOSING PRAYERS
NOVENA PRAYER
O Jesus, who, in Thy cruel Passion didst become the 'abject of men and the Man of Sorrows,' I worship Thy divine Face. Once it shone with the beauty and sweetness of the Divinity; but now, for my sake, it is become as 'the face of a leper.' Yet, in that disfigured Countenance, I recognize Thy infinite love, and I am consumed with the desire of making Thee loved by all mankind. The tears that flowed so abundantly from Thy Eyes are to me as precious pearls that I delight to gather, that with their worth I may ransom the souls of poor sinners. O Jesus, whose Face is the sole beauty that ravishes my heart, I may not see here below the sweetness of Thy glance, nor feel the ineffable tenderness of Thy kiss, I bow to Thy Will—but I pray Thee to imprint in me Thy divine likeness, and I implore Thee so to inflame me with Thy love, that it may quickly consume me, and that I may soon reach the vision of Thy glorious Face in heaven. Amen.

ANTIPHON (English)
Christ humbled himself, becoming obedient unto death, even to the death of the cross. For which cause God also hath exalted him, and hath given him a name which is above all names: That in the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those that are in heaven, on earth, and under the earth: V. The light of Thy Face has been shed upon us, O Lord. R. Thou hast given joy to our hearts. Let us pray: O God, who didst wish to leave as a memorial of Thee to us, who are marked with the light of Thy countenance, an image impressed upon a cloth at the urging of Veronica: through Thy passion and Cross grant us, we beseech Thee; that we may now upon the earth be so able to venerate and adore it through a glass darkly, that in safety may we see Thee face to face when Thou comest to judge. Who livest and reignst with the Father, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen |
ANTIPHON (Latin)
Amen |
CLOSING PRAYER
O Sweetest and Most Lovable Face, Who is being praised all over the world. You are our hope and refuge, we raise to You our eyes, to You we elevate our prayers, to You we dedicate our thoughts, our hearts, and our souls. Vouchsafe, O Lord, to receive our veneration and tenderness, that we may be able to meditate well on the sufferings You have undergone in order to redeem us. O Sacred Face of Our Redeemer, be king of our hearts which we wholly offer to Your Divine Majesty. O Glorious Face, strengthen our will, support our weaknesses, in order that we can atone for our sins. O God and Our Redeemer, if it is for your greatest glory; if it is for the good of our souls, grant us the graces and favors we ask and desire, if not give us what is good for our spiritual life, the grace that will eventually bring us to heaven. Amen.
